The Name of the Wind

It has been a while… As I managed to pass all my major exams, Jill was too generous not to push me out of my slack corner, unfortunately her exams are steadily approaching so I should get things under control and put this joint into running mode again.
As to give you something to read about, I will throw a view on something I read a little while back. Last summer my editor introduced me to Patrick Rothfuss’ “The Name of the Wind”. It managed to hook me on the big tomes of fantasy (I mean the ones heavy enough to use as a weapon) once again. Rothfuss succeeds in a very refreshing peruse of the usual fantasy protagonist in a world of legends, magic and amazing musical performances. As many other main characters our hero is orphaned at young age, in this case very violently and suddenly, after which he is thrown into life of crime and homelessness in a vast medieval metropolis. A rather unlikely hero material. After a lucky break though, the story takes a little turn into the positive, in a way, when he wins his way into the Academy where we are introduced more extensively to a very scientific magic system based on strong willpower and complicated formulas, which is later overshadowed by the magic of the Names and the power they hold. The story is very introductory to the amazing world of Rothfuss’ imagination. In my recent digital years it is rare for a book to enthral and force me to not put it down until I have finished reading it. I am really anxious for the upcoming sequel, and second entry in “The Kingkiller Chronicle” trilogy.
